Summer in the City’s Project Plant is helping gardens and communities grow throughout Detroit. If April showers bring May flowers, then Summer volunteers bring garden cheers. Rhyming aside, it’s a pretty big deal: Summer in the City partners with Greening of Detroit and over 20 community gardens to plant, weed, water, harvest and landscape green spaces ranging in size from inches to acres.
Detroit is at the forefront of the international urban agriculture movement – and it takes a lot of manpower (okay, people power) to sustain the gardens. The combination of vacant land, poverty, limited grocery and transportation resources makes gardening the ultimate “crisi-tunity”: a creative way for neighbors to come together and reclaim Detroit’s open spaces and produce some delicious organic vegetables while their at it.
