Summer in the City: A Program of Incredible Young Leaders Serving Metro-Detroit!
Who SITC Is…
Born in the summer of 2002 by three 20-year-olds Ben, Neil and Michael at home from college, Summer in the City is a dynamic non-profit that is changing the impact of volunteers on Detroit and of Detroit on volunteers.
By bringing a diverse group of young people together to invest their energy in Detroit, Summer in the City programs address the immediate needs of city neighborhoods and foster a regional mindset.
The volunteers provide the man/woman-power that makes SITC “do-ocracy” possible. Volunteers come from throughout Southeast Michigan and engage in fun, flexible and fulfilling projects throughout the city of Detroit. Volunteers range in age from 14 to forty and come from all throughout Metro-Detroit.
Fun, Flexible and Fulfilling
SITC creates opportunities for volunteers to participate in that are meaningful to the volunteer, easy to participate and fulfilling for the community partner. You won’t see SITC volunteers doing city ‘clean-up’ but you will see them Painting, Planting and Playing
Every day, we paint, plant and play. After years of trial and error (sometimes more error than trial), we have found that painting murals, planting community gardens and mentoring (rocking out with) kids in Detroit provide the greatest experience for our volunteers and impact for our community partners.
