Working with the children of Detroit has always been at the core of Summer in the City. Since 2002, we have partnered with public schools, charters, the City, community organizations, and neighborhood associations to provide fun and engaging summer opportunities for kids.
We currently facilitate seven camps in Detroit and Hamtramck. We strive to keep them free or low-cost for all participants. Our older volunteers partner with K-5 students on myriad activities, including arts & crafts, reading, sports, and gardening. Each week culminates in a field trip, with destinations including the Detroit Zoo, Michigan Science Center, and the Henry Ford.
Each camp is run in partnership with a local organization, and has different enrollment options and openings. While we cannot guarantee any openings, contact us by phone or email (available at the top of this page) for more information on enrollment.
The end of summer (and Summer in the City) means school is just around the corner. At Finale Friday, each camper (and any other neighborhood kids who attend) receives a backpack. Everyone starts with the same backpack, but the best part is filling it. Each camper has the opportunity to stuff their backpack full of the supplies they want.
Books are always in demand. SITC uses books throughout the summer for our programming. We also help supply books throughout the school year at both special SITC events and for partner organizations who help get them in childrens' hands year-round. If you have books to donate, or would like more information on how you can assist these efforts, our contact info is in the menu bar, and we'd love to work with you.
