Alumni & Friends

Read on about the awesome Alumni & Friends of SITC!

Back in ’05, I took on an environmental education internship that delivered my first legitimate introduction to Detroit. Working closely with children who seemed to know little more than I did about the city gave me a fresh look at what life was like in a world replete with unrealized potential.

In fall of 2010, I chanced upon the opportunity to help man the helm of the S.S. SITC, and since I have been surrounded by some of the most inspired and inspiring rabble rousers I have met to date.

My six summers with Summer in the City were some of the best of my life. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to fall in love with the city of Detroit, and I’ll always be proud of the walls I covered in mind-blowingly bright latex paint.

I may have moved to DC for the time being, but Detroit and SITC will always have a special place in my heart… and on my keychain, car seats, shoes, and running shorts, which are still covered in paint that I can’t (and don’t want to) remove.

SITC first appeared on my radar as a lowly freshman at Andover High School. A hundred years later, SITC represents some of my absolute favorite parts, people, and pastimes in Detroit! I’ve been around the world in the past couple years, but Detroit has been close to my heart. The lemurs, sand caves of Madagascar and the mountains of South Africa both served as backdrops for my epic SITC purple shirt!

From volunteering, to crew leading, to starting a sports camp, to traveling the world, SITC occupies a big place in my inbox and my heart.

Hi everyone! On a cold winter afternoon in 2009, I read a Jewish News article featuring SITC. I wanted to get involved, so I called Ben and the rest was history. I enjoyed my first summer on Crew so much that I returned the following two summers as Chief Financial Officer.

SITC fostered my love for the Detroit community and my commitment to the betterment of this city. Rather than staying in Boston after graduating this spring, I moved back to Detroit to pursue a Masters in Accounting at Walsh College and began an internship at Title Source downtown.

There are few moments in this world as serendipitous as my joining with SITC. While sitting in a graduate school education class at Wayne State, a bearded gentleman approached me. A conversation about politics turned into a recruiting ploy and before I knew it, Ben Falik and Michael Goldberg were at my midtown apartment loading a tattered barbecue into the back of a tattered orange van. I was hooked…

SITC has been a staple of my life since the early part of 2007. What began as a single summer has now evolved into hours of brainstorming, collaborating, traveling and friendship.
