Andrew Sokoly, long-time friend and iPod DJ extraordinaire, told me about a Detroit not-for-profit called Summer in the City that he was involved circa 2007. Every time we talked about it, his voice filled with excitement – stories about meeting people, having fun, and working to improve Detroit. He also talked about one of the founders; some guy name Ben; quite frankly, the guy sounded like a yahoo, but Andrew is a good judge of character so he couldn’t be that bad. Well…I had the pleasure of meeting Ben after Andrew asked if I would be interested in joining the Board. My intuition was right, what a yahoo (in the good way, of course). I joined SITC in late 2008 on the Finance Committee and now serve as Treasurer (and now understand why Andrew and Ben were so excited).
SITC has provides a great way for youth to connect with the city. While I am not considered a part of traditional “youth” anymore, SITC certainly helped me connect with the city. I am honored and excited to be a part of this great organization.

Deportes en Clark Park!
Like so many people who live in the area, I love Detroit sports. Detroit has some of the greatest fans in the world and, even when our teams aren’t winning championships, there is something great about the shared experience of root-root-rooting for the home team.
Of course, we can’t let the professionals have all the fun. Play sports is a great way to stay in shape, make friends and develop valuable leadership skills. And there may be no better place for sport in Detroit than Clark Park. I have had the privilege of playing ice hockey there in the winter and there is great baseball and soccer to be had during the rest of the year. Summer in the City loves Clark Park so much that we are in the process of buying a house across the street. We also get to spend our summers there with the amazing kids at Maybury Elementary School and Latino Mission Society – and my goal is to make sure sporting opportunities abound there.
