When I first came to Summer in the City in 2008, I had no idea just how profound of an impact the program would have on me over the next few years. What started as something to fulfill a community service requirement evolved into an opportunity to play a role in revitalizing a struggling Motor City.
My experiences getting to know the youth of Detroit and improving the aesthetics of the city over the last three years have reshaped my perspective of what I once thought was a lost city: there are clear signs of hope for Detroit’s recovery. Summer in the City exemplifies that potential.

Each day and every year, before Summer in the City can run any of its operations downtown, we have to manage our own transit system. Driving hundreds of volunteers to Detroit every day is no cheap undertaking. Moreover, in light of rising prices at the pump, the cost of fueling our carpool network will almost certainly proliferate this summer.
Funding for Summer in the City’s transportation system is critical—without vehicles to deliver our volunteers downtown, none of what we do (be it, painting murals, gardening, or mentoring young kids) would be possible. While it may seem self-evident or cliché, the gas that fills our vehicles is truly what fuels the engine behind Summer in the City’s operations each and every day.
