I’ve always wanted to do my part to help improve Detroit. But as a high school student, the question for me was how. So when I heard about SITC from some friends at school, it seemed like the perfect means through which to volunteer. I signed up and went, and was amazed at how simple it was to provide such significant service. Among many highlights: painting a beautiful mural at Palmer Park, which the city had been threatening to close; seeing the smiles on the Latino Mission Society kids’ faces from being engaged in fun activities – at the Detroit Science Center, or just playing at the local park.

Detroit is a city that’s too often seen in a negative light. While it may have its problems, people who truly want to make a difference provide a source of hope for the future – people like those in Summer in the City. My hope is that SITC continues to grow, having more people who are enthusiastic about beautifying the city offer up their time, and Detroit rebuild the solid reputation it once had.

Support Kelsey’s Cause!

For the kids at the schools we work with, going to exotic destinations – relatively exotic – is unforgettable. Whether it’s a day spent playing games in Belle Isle, or enriching their young minds at the Detroit Science Center, they delight in the chance to explore somewhere new.

But without additional funding, it be a challenge to make these memories with all the kids in our growing youth programs. There’s transportation, admission and food – all paid for by Summer in the City. With your help, we can continue to make trips possible for these kids and even expand on what we already do. Help make a big difference in the city of Detroit – starting with its littlest residents
