I was told about Summer in the City via a friend the summer before my freshman year at Andover. I grumbled and protested but my mom wanted me to go, so I did. Seven years later and I am spending every day of my summer in Detroit with Summer in the City. I’m not sure what most drew me to SITC: my love for helping people, my love for Detroit, or being surrounded by people who love the same things that I do.
The SITC Crew Members are some pretty special people. How many teenagers and college students want to spend their summer rooting around in the dirt or having paint flakes fall into their eyes? I know a group of people who would gladly jump at the opportunity. Summer in the City isn’t just a way to fulfill your community service hours or something to put down on your resume; it’s a way of life.

Sport is Universal!
Two years ago I went around to all the local schools and dug around through my own garage looking for old sports equipment. I rounded up a couple of footballs, a lot of baseball equipment, and a dozen soccer balls, most of which came from our overstuffed garage. Dig through the bag of baseball gloves and you’ll find one with my little brother’s name on it in blue sharpie. Two years ago, our youth programs were pretty small. My little cache of sports equipment did the job.
Now, Summer in the City is bigger than ever and our youth programs have expanded across the city and as our programs grow, our resources stretch thin. My small assortment of sports equipment must now service a handful of schools and its not doing the job. It’s hard to teach kids how to play football when there are only two foam footballs to demonstrate with. That’s why I’m asking; if you have any old sports equipment that is cluttering up your garage or know someone who does, donate it to SITC and we’ll put it to good use.
