A girl walks into a career fair. She goes over to a table labeled ‘Summer in the City’. She chats, laughs, and gives them her phone number. A few months later, the girl is standing in a classroom of 10-year-olds, revealing the stories behind constellations, building dream houses out of leftover cardboard, and listening to tales of real-life superheroes.

Well, that girl was me. The memories, mine. That first summer was an adventure – a summer in the city. Where else could bed sheets so easily transform into the night sky or a common man into a caped crusader?

For me, Summer in the City is about the possible rather than the impossible; it’s why I come back every summer for however long and in whatever capacity I can.

Help Geraldine have Picnics on the Playground!

Where do fruits and vegetables come from? If you live in the countryside, you might say they come from a farm. In the suburb, you might say they come from the supermarket. In the city, you might say that they don’t come at all.

One of my biggest hopes is to incorporate fresh foods into the kids’ day in the form of an afternoon picnic. I love putting together large meals and would love to spend the morning cooking with the older kids and teaching them about fresh foods.

The money I hope to raise would cover the cost of groceries, serving utensils, and other kitchen tools. It would be so much fun to work together and make a satisfying meal for the entire class. If enough money is raised, we could even do it twice! Or three times! Or more!
