It all started one Friday night at Cafe D’Mongos when I had the good fortune of running into a Summer in the City Board President Andrew Sokoly. After talking to Andrew at length about his incredible organization, he tracked me down with an invitation to join him on the board.

Going to school and working in Detroit has sparked a sense of pride and loyalty to a city that outsiders view as rough and ravaged. To me, Detroit is the one of those cities that can defy all odds and reinvent itself. I wanted to me a part of this exciting future, but wasn’t sure how to get involved. Now that I’ve had a chance to paint a Summer in the City mural and meet the amazing people involved, I could not be more excited to get in on the action.

So be forewarned if you happen to bump into Andrew out in Detroit.

Master Gardeners!

Summer in the City’s Project Plant makes me green with envy that I can’t spend every day gardening in the D. The impact that our volunteers have and the relationships they build with Detroit’s community gardeners is simply extraordinary. The best part is that it makes such a powerful impact on the volunteers at the same time.

I have know from experience that having some green thumbs on hand can be the difference in making your garden grow. And for Summer in the City, that knowledgeable, energetic on-site leadership turns work that could otherwise be tedious into inspirational experiences. My goal is to raise enough money for a modest subsidy for three Summer in the City “master gardeners,” dedicated site leaders who will develop their own urban agriculture skill sets and ensure that our work is, as advertised, “fun, flexible and fulfilling.” Or, I suppose, “verdant, vibrant and viral.”
