Detroit has been in the background during the majority of my childhood. My mother was, and still is, very avid about letting us see the truth in the city. As I was growing up, I spent some time in the city, but nowhere near as much time as I have of late. I have always felt a certain fondness for Detroit but SITC really expanded it.
Summer in the City has allowed for me to truly see the city in a different light. The interaction that occurs every day that we are working has exposed me to the true spirit of the people, and through them, the city. There is such a strong sense of hope and community that most people have yet to experience. I hope that Summer in the City inspires more and more metro Detroit teens to become more involved in the future of the city. It has the potential to bring the entire metro area together as one community.

Detroit has an abundance of fertile, available land. That being said, I think it is achievable for us to help Detroiters help themselves grow fresh, healthy produce, one community garden at a time. Summer in the City aims to nourish the hearts, minds, and bodies of people throughout the metro Detroit area.
