Midway through my first summer in the city, I sent the SITC brass a 2400 word email entitled, “Thoughts about Summer In The City” reflecting on the things I liked about the program and other things I’d like to change. It concluded, “Overall, I’m very glad I ended up doing SITC instead of getting a job at the mall. I, and I’m sure many others, would love to see SITC become a better organization, and that is why I wrote you.”
Ben left me no choice but to run the mural program ever since and I must say (in fewer than 2400 words) it has been an incredible experience to contribute to the growth and development of Summer in the City. Most exciting, perhaps, it how much more potential has to expand and evolve.

Summer in the City murals are in high demand throughout Detroit and we have some talented new artists on board to help expand our repertoire. One of the simple reasons we have been able to partner with so many organizations to paint colorful, enduring murals is that we have paint. And not just any paint – Sherwin Williams Super Paint, which goes on smooth (no primer necessary!) and stays bright year after year.
At $25 per gallon and approximately $250 per mural, our paint is relatively expensive, but it’s impact in beautifying schools, streets, playgrounds and parks makes it an outright bargain. Really, the best way to think about it is as an investment – one I hope you’ll consider making.
