Summer in the City is an organization new to me, but with a mission all too familiar. Growing up in Oak Park and attending Berkley High School, community service and volunteerism were major themes in my development. But like so many of my childhood friends after college, I said goodbye to Michigan determined to carve a niche in the world. I spent three glorious years in Hawaii teaching elementary school with Teach For America. But I kept my eye on Detroit; waiting and plotting my return.
The stars finally aligned in August of 2010, when I joined the Teach For America Detroit staff to usher in a new group of inspired leaders. Since then, there’s been this buzz about my ears in the sound of Summer in the City. Ben and I finally crossed paths and the connection between our aims was more than obvious: Let’s get our teachers in your gardens and parks!

SITC & TFA: Partners In Leadership!
I’m thrilled that Teach For America and Summer in the City are joining hands this summer. These two organizations are near and dear to my heart; both exemplify what leadership and dedication can do to improve the lives of children. Our aim this summer is for both students and teachers to stay active and involved.
Your contributions will increase our capacity to reach a broader coalition of volunteers (both teacher and student) and will provide more kids across the city with the opportunity to give back to Detroit.
